ChatGPTWhat just changed and what it actually means
Google has cut the price of its budget AI plan. Google AI Plus drops from $7.99 to $4.99 per month, and storage doubles from 200 gigabytes to 400 gigabytes. The change rolls out in the United States in the coming days.
A subscription is the monthly fee you pay to use a service. For Google AI Plus, that fee gets you access to Google’s AI features, more cloud storage, and assistance built into Gmail and Docs. The new $4.99 tag puts it in the same price range as a music subscription.
Google’s lineup keeps its three layers. Plus at the bottom, Pro in the middle, Ultra at the top. What changes is the entry door, which is now much cheaper. If you were curious about paid AI but found 20 dollars too steep, the entry just dropped to less than the cost of a few coffees.
No service has been quietly cut to make the price work. The storage even went up. It is a clean reduction, the kind that only happens when a big player decides to grab market share fast and is ready to compress its own margins to do it.

Why this is happening now
The move did not come out of nowhere. In August 2025, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in India at around $4.60 per month, the first big sub-5 dollar AI subscription. Google followed in December 2025 with its own sub-$5 plan, also in India.
What Google is doing today is bringing the Indian price into the United States. The strategy of “undercut, bundle, and capture users” stops being an emerging-market experiment and becomes the new mainstream playbook in the world’s most lucrative AI market.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude (a chatbot that competes with ChatGPT and Gemini), has no equivalent plan. No budget tier, no localized prices, nothing below 10 dollars on any market. That puts Anthropic in an uncomfortable position when the rest of the industry races to the bottom.
In the short term, expect Google AI Plus to gain a lot of new sign-ups quickly. People who hesitated will try it, because the cost of trying just collapsed. Other players will be forced to choose between cutting their prices, adding bonus features, or watching their growth slow down.

How the $4.99 price cut shifts your AI subscription math
For a regular user, this is great news. AI tools that were sold as premium services are now sitting at impulse-buy prices. You can experiment, mix and match between providers, and stop a subscription without thinking twice. AI is becoming a commodity, like cloud storage or streaming.
If you have been waiting for the right time to pay for AI, this is probably it. The $4.99 Google AI Plus plan gives you a credible toolkit (chat, drafting help, more storage, image features) for less than a sandwich. Even if you cancel after one month, you barely spent anything.
For people who already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at 20 dollars per month, the math will change. You will start to ask if you really need the premium tier, or if the budget version of the rival does enough for your daily use. Switching becomes a real option.
Over the next three to six months, the most likely outcome is that OpenAI, Anthropic, and even Microsoft Copilot will roll out cheaper plans of their own. The price floor of monthly AI will keep dropping, possibly toward 3 dollars, until a new norm settles. That norm will not look anything like the 2024 luxury pricing.
The risk is at the other end. Cheaper plans usually mean stricter usage limits, more ads at some point, or a free tier that gets quietly weakened to push you into paying. Watch closely how Google AI Plus evolves over the coming months, because the entry price grabs headlines, but the fine print is where the real story lives.
