What a reference image can and cannot tell you
The honest limit is worth stating early. Apple Reference Image only works on photos taken in Reference mode on a supported iPhone, so it says nothing about the thousands of images that reach you from everywhere else.
Apple is handling that other half separately. The company is adding support for SynthID, a standard designed to tag pictures that were made or altered by AI, and that support arrives in a software update later this year.
Put together, the two approaches cover opposite ends of the same question. One marks what was generated, the other vouches for what was captured, and neither works well on its own.

It is also opt-in, which matters more than it sounds. Nothing changes in your camera unless you deliberately turn Reference mode on, so your ordinary snapshots keep behaving exactly as they do today.
Where you live changes what you get. In China the feature is not available at launch because of regulatory requirements, and in the EU the capture half is also missing at launch on the iPhone 18 Pro models.
European users are not fully locked out though. Anyone running iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 can still develop and view reference images, so you can check a photo somebody else captured even if your own phone cannot make one yet.
